DEVOLUTION - A
FAILURE OF GOVERNMENT
RATHER THAN PRINCIPLE
Labour's
half-baked ideas on devolution prompted this "No" vote.
With so few powers promised, this was not a true test of
the region's desire to take power from London. Worse still,
by confusing questions of local government reform with regional
assemblies, Labour alienated many core supporters of devolution.
Liberal Democrats believe we now need a Convention of the
North, where people from all three northern regions can reflect
on the future for regional democracy.
Tory
opposition to regionalism is, quite frankly, mindless.
The plain fact is that we already have Regional Government.
In our area it is the South East Regional Assembly, we also
have Regional Health quangos. The only difference is that
they do not have people directly elected to them.
