Eling |
Brian Dash, Parliamentary Spokesman for the New Forest Liberal
Democrats, enjoyed a visit to Eling Tide Mill this week.
He
was the special guest of Councillor Mike Shand, Chairman of
the Trustees. The visit was hosted by David Blackwell-Eaton,
the Tide Mill Manager.
The Tide Mill is the oldest working mill of its type in the
country and of international importance, due to its rarity.
Brian learnt about the history of the building and the unique
set of circumstances that has allowed it to survive as a working
mill, to this day.
Amongst the fascinating facts was that flour dust is explosive,
preventing milling from continuing at night (until the invention
of the Davey lamp) and that Millers were amongst the least
popular of people because of their role in collecting taxes.

"A truely interesting visit
to the Eling Tide Mill" |
Brian
says "It was a truly interesting visit. I'm sure
that there is much more scope for encouraging more educational
visits - particularly by school children.
It occurs to me that
the mill and its operations will have interest to pupils
studying, geography, the environment, and engineering, as well
as history."
