Brian with Ian Nelson of
Sunnyfields Organic Farm |
Liberal
Democrat Parliamentary Campaigner, Brian Dash, spent some
time "down on the farm",
this week.
Brian was the guest of Ian Nelson, Proprietor
of Sunnyfields Organic Farm, located between Totton and Marchwood,
in the New Forest East constituency.
The
farm is already a great success story, originating from
organic horticultural production. Over time, the business
has diversified into importing, wholesaling and retailing.
The farm now supplies top restaurants, such as those run
by Jamie Oliver and Gary Rhodes. Other celebrities who
enjoy Sunnyfields products include the pop stars Sting and
members of the Rolling Stones.
The
business farms on four sites, covering some 150 acres.
The shop is well used by local people. In peak season,
the farms employ up to 50 staff members. Turnover in 2004/5
is expected to be £1.6
million.
Ian was able to outline his future plans to Brian,
including the creation of a Food, Farming and Environment
Centre. The plans are currently undergoing a feasibility
study but are very ambitious and visionary, incorporating
major benefits, including tourism, education, employment
and commercial benefits.
Brian
was treated to a bumpy ride on a 4x4 vehicle, around the
proposed 200 acre site, which borders the farm, currently
being excavated and is otherwise likely to be returned
to low level grazing land.
Brian
says: "It was a fascinating visit. Ian has
a great track record of business success and some great ideas
for the future. Ian appreciates that the project will only
succeed if local people are supportive of what he is trying
to do. I'm going to keep a close eye on progress and am happy
to help, if required". |
