The popular Hythe
Ferry, under serious threat from a financial crisis, may
yet be saved by County Councillor, Brian Dash.
The historic passenger service to and from Southampton,
attracts thousands of commuters, summer tourists and shoppers.
However, local people, especially traders, have been left
reeling by news that the future of the ferry service is threatened
with ferry operators being faced with a business rate that
has shot up by a massive 740%.
Worried Ferry bosses contacted
Councillor Brian Dash who immediately asked Officers at
the Regional Valuation Offices to re-think their policy
towards the ferry. Councillor Dash has now received a written
undertaking that the massive rates rise will be reviewed.
Councillor Dash says "The ferry service is a
vital lifeline to Hythe. It has a huge impact on the local
economy. I'm determined that the threat to this business
is removed. I'm encouraged by the immediate response of the
valuation officers. Hopefully, we can get a much more realistic
charge in place - one that will keep the ferry running". |
